The Canadian Women's Health
Network (CWHN) is a network of individuals, groups, organizations,
and institutions concerned with women's health. The CWHN recognizes
the importance of information sharing, education and advocacy
for women's health and equality. We work to build and strengthen
the women's health movement in Canada and throughout the world.
Health is a human right that, because of poverty, politics and
dwindling resources for health and social services, eludes many
women. Guided by a women-centred, holistic vision of women's
health, the CWHN recognizes and respects the diverse realities
of women's lives and takes an active stance in ending discrimination
based on gender, region, race, age, language, religion, sexual
orientation or ability.
Working in partnerships with the Centres of Excellence, the CWHN
is committed to building and strengthening the many avenues of
communication already in place, and to exploring new ways to
bring Centres of Excellence for Women's Health news to a wider
audience.
Here are some examples of what we do:
- we provide easy access to health
information and research on women's health, through our toll-free
number and e-mail address;
- we collect and produce accurate,
user-friendly print materials, videos, audiotapes, CD-ROMS and
other information;
- we provide important information
on-line so that people can access it no matter where they live
in Canada;
- we are building strong national
ties between health organizations and action groups;
- we work to change health policies
and practices so they better serve women; and
- we promote women's involvement
in health research at the community, university, hospital and
government levels.
The Canadian Women's Health Network
Databases
Designed to storehouse
women's health information in English and French, the CWHN
Databases were launched this year. These databases hold reference
information on organizations, individuals, resources and research/projects
from across the country and around the world. With 56 subject
headings, almost any type of women's health information is accessible
on-line through our web site. The databases are gradually being
populated and new women's health information can be added by
visitors to our web site (all entries are verified).
This year the CWHN developed our research/projects databases
in coordination with the Centres of Excellence to hold information
on their research projects (www.cwhn.ca/eng/database.html).
Women's Health Thesaurus
We are putting the finishing
touches on a new thesaurus of women's health terms. The CWHN
Women's Health Thesaurus is designed to help us be clear
about what women's health researchers and advocates mean when
they use terms not found in traditional medical and research
language. Copies will be available for order from us in the new
year.
CWHN & The Media
The media increasingly
looks to us as an excellent source for finding groups or individuals
who can speak to various health issues. When we receive requests
for interviews from the media, we refer these calls to our various
members, affiliates and Centres of Excellence researchers often
using our databases.
What's Hot?
on our Web Site
Our bilingual web site
holds the ever-expanding resources collected through our clearinghouse,
and provides the most up-to-date facts and latest breaking news
on women's health. Our site is designed to be both comprehensive
and user-friendly. In addition to information about the CWHN,
and highlights from past and current issues of our magazine,
we list emerging women's health information, plus background
and links for the Centres of Excellence for Women's Health Program.
Updated weekly, the What's Hot? section of our web site
connects people with developments and events in women's health
as they happen. It features updates on clinical treatments, complementary
therapies, research, policy, activism and issues. This is where
people can find information about upcoming conferences and links
to other sites of interest.
Publication: Network magazine
This year our magazine,
Network, celebrated its first year of publication.
With news, debate, interviews, how-to articles, in-depth features,
and plenty of resources, Network keeps our readers
in touch with women's health news you just won't find anywhere
else.
