    WHO ARE WE?

The BC Centre of Excellence for Women's Health is a research and policy centre created by feminist researchers, health care providers, community groups, and policy makers dedicated to improving women's health.

    WHAT DO WE DO?

We improve the health of women by fostering innovative, multi-disciplinary action-research on health policy, women's health initiatives, and women-centred programs. The mandate of the Centre is to facilitate research on the social determinants of health for marginalized women. Therefore, projects which will improve the health of women who face disadvantages due to socio-economic status, race, culture, age, sexual orientation, geography, disability, and/or addiction are particularly encouraged.

CURRENT PROGRAM-FUNDED RESEARCH AND POLICY AGENDA

The BCCEWH has funded more than fifty projects, each of which fall under three main themes. Research teams are usually community/academic partnerships that are doing action-research to improve women's health and change health policy.
A list of projects is available at: www.bccewh.bc.ca.

    • Theme 1: Healthy Women in Healthy Communities
How is health linked to the context of women's roles as wives, partners, mothers, daughters, caregivers, volunteers, workers and members of the community?

    • Theme 2: Health Status and Health Determinants
How do social, economic, cultural, and political factors affect women's health status and use of the health care system?

    • Theme 3: Women-Centred Care
How can health care systems and other services for women be made more inclusive, responsive, and appropriate for a diversity of women?

    OPPORTUNITIES FOR FUNDING

We regularly accept applications for seed grants of up to $5,000. Please contact our Vancouver office for details: E-mail

CURRENT EXTERNALLY FUNDED RESEARCH & POLICY AGENDA

Working groups have been developed or are currently under development in the areas of: violence & health, addictions & dependencies, women's mental health, adolescent health, lesbian health, First Nation's health, economic costing, and communications, among others. Working groups develop joint proposals for externally funded research and policy projects that are then managed and/or directed by the groups.

    WE HAVE A NORTHERN SECRETARIAT

As an independent group of community and academic members based on the campus of the University of Northern British Columbia, the Northern Secretariat of the BC Centre of Excellence for Women's Health facilitates research and policy work centred in, but not limited to, Northern and rural communities.
