PRAIRIE WOMEN'S HEALTH CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE (PWHCE)
Director: Linda DuBickAdministrative Coordinator: Sharon Jeanson Manitoba Program Coordinator: Jennifer Howard Saskatoon Program Coordinator: Kay Willson Regina Program Coordinator: Valda Dohlen Web site: www.pwhce.ca E-mail: pwhce@uwinnipeg.ca The Prairie Women's Health Centre of Excellence (PWHCE) supports and conducts policy-oriented research designed to improve the health status of Canadian women. The Centre recognizes that women's health concerns and needs vary greatly among women. Socio-economic status, race, culture, sexual orientation, geography, disability and age all impose different health challenges that require individual examination and special attention. The Centre's challenge is to assess and pursue that diversity. The PWHCE brings individuals and organizations based in the community together with academic researchers and policy-makers to address important issues in women's health. The PWHCE's partner organizations are the Fédération provinciale des fransaskoises (Saskatchewan), the Prairie Region Health Promotion Research Centre at the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Regina, the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg, and the Women's Health Clinic in Winnipeg. The Centre's Board of Directors is widely representative, including individuals from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and has a special commitment to reflect the diversity among women. Three Theme Advisory Groups identify and recommend research projects and partnerships in the PWHCE's priority research areas:
1997/98 RESEARCH GRANTSIn April 1998, the PWHCE announced women's health research grants totaling $145,802. The projects address both the variety of health issues among women and issues common to groups of women. The projects are scheduled for completion in 1999, and their findings will be widely disseminated to the public, women's groups, the research community, policy-makers and service providers. They will provide valuable information currently unavailable in the area of women's health, and evidence to assist in the development of effective policies for women's health care.1998/99 RESEARCH GRANTSThe PWHCE is concentrating its 1998/99 grants program on research topics in two theme areas: the impact of selected determinants of health on women, and the impact of health reform on women. A call for proposals from community/research team partnerships on women's health research and policy development was issued in October 1998. Grants will be announced in May 1999.1998/99 DEVELOPMENTAL GRANTSThe PWHCE awarded developmental grants totalling $10,000 in February 1999 to community- based organizations and researchers. The grants are intended to assist the partners in developing proposals for research projects to address the health needs of marginalized groups of women whose needs are relatively unknown to policy-makers; or who have limited knowledge, experience or resources to undertake research.NEW PUBLICATIONSFour new research reports are available for $10.00 each (to cover printing and postage costs) from the address below:
