A Centre-Wide Initiative: Women and Health Reform

Project  Update: Women and Health Care Reform

The goal of this initiative is to gather information on the impact of Canadian health reforms on women, in order to:

    • develop ideas for further collaborative research among the Centres of Excellence for Women's Health Program (CEWHP)

    • influence policy decisions from a gender lens perspective

With a focus on privatization, chosen as the vehicle through which to analyze the broader impacts of health reforms, regional scans are used to provide an overview of how health reforms have been incorporated at provincial levels, and their effects on women.

This initiative is presently focussing on:
    • developing a means of monitoring health reform
    • developing a means of monitoring research on women and health reform
    • developing a means of coordinating research, identifying gaps in this research and linking these to policy, and
    • developing a gender lens, as a collective and on-going project.

The regional scans involve a review of existing literature on health reform, particularly where it addresses impacts on women as healthcare users and providers. The scans will also help identify gaps in the research and where further gender-based research needs to be conducted. Research will compare how health reforms have been implemented across regions, and will address the impacts of reforms on women at policy and organizational levels. Analytical frameworks will ensure that factors such as race, class, ability and language are clearly taken into account

The Health Reform Reference Group is made up of one member of each Centre of Excellence, and is led by Dr. Pat Armstrong, of Carleton University.
