Play: Sarah’s Daughters

January 28 & 29, 2010

Last August Camosun College School of Nursing lost a valued member of our team when Patty Foster lost her battle with breast cancer.  To honour Patty’s memory, it was decided to establish a bursary in her honour.  This bursary will assist future nurses in completing their education.  To kick start the bursary, Camosun College School of Nursing is producing the play Sarah’s Daughters, a moving story of a woman’s journey in dealing with genetic breast cancer.

Sarah’s Daughters will run January 28th @ 7:30pm; January 29th at 2:00pm & 7:30pm. Tickets are $24.00 per person and $18.75 for students and seniors.  Tickets are available through the McPherson box office or vouchers can be purchased through Camosun College Nursing Faculty. Prior to the matinee there will be a brief educational discussion regarding the development and writing of “Sarah’s Daughters”.  Vouchers purchased must be redeemed at the McPherson Box office to get an actual ticket and for seat selection.  It is recommended that this is done as soon as possible after purchasing a voucher.

Registration for the MCHP 20th Anniversary Conference closes on February 28.

The heart of the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy 20th Anniversary Conference lies in creating new knowledge that informs health and social policy, therefore this conference will explore the connection between research, policy and practice, clinical care and public health. To do so we built the conference around four plenary sessions which revolve around topics in Research, Knowledge Translation, and Data Linkage.  Concurrent breakout sessions following three of the plenary sessions will allow participants to explore these topics in a more intimate setting. Improving Health Inequities through Sex- And Gender-Based Analysis

Tuesday, Dec 15th, 2009 Noon-1:00 pm

Event flyer available at http://www.bccewh.bc.ca/news-events/default.htm

Efforts to reduce health inequities require an understanding of the social and physical conditions which produce and sustain them. Sex (biology) and gender (social relations) are crucial pieces of this context as they can exacerbate, sustain, or even create health inequities. Sex- and gender-based analysis (SGBA) can help us understand how socioeconomic status and geographical location intersect with gender and how the interactions between them have powerful implications for health policy and planning. This presentation will introduce SGBA and illustrate its use through several examples, highlighting recent analyses we have conducted regarding health inequities in BC and their potential implications for women and women's health.

Presenters: Ann Pederson, Director, British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women's Health Steve Chasey, Data & Surveillance Specialist, British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women's Health

Workshop: Addressing inequities in primary healthcare

Monday, January 18, 2010, 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM
The Hilton Toronto, Toronto Ontario

In this workshop, we consider the ways in which patient-centred primary health care can and should account for gender and diversity. We will examine the evidence related to gender as a determinant of health, sex differences in illness, and whether gender equity has any bearing on patient care. Drawing on theories related to gender, power, diversity, and masculinities the panellists will discuss the ways that gender can influence access to and delivery of primary care in Canada. We will also explore assumptions made about patients receiving primary care and describe how application of gender sensitive research and interpretation of findings can result in primary health care services that are more tailored and effective. Finally we will focus on new avenues of research related to gender and primary care.

Featuring:
Susan Phillips, Professor, Department of Family Medicine, Queens University
Lorraine Greaves, Executive Director, Health System Strategy Division, Ministry of Health and Long term Care, Ontario
Blye Frank, Professor, Division of Medical Education, Dalhousie University

Wednesday, September 16, 2009, 5:00p.m.

Buddies In Bad Times Theatre, 12 Alexander Street, Toronto

Young people of all genders and sexualities are sexually active; the average age that Canadians first have sex is 17. So why is it when a girl is sexually active, she can be considered to be easy, but when a guy is sexually active he can be called a stud? How do these gendered stereotypes affect young people’s physical, emotional and sexual health? How do they intersect with race, class, and oppression? In what ways do these stereotypes influence how parents, teachers, researchers and health care providers talk and think about youth sexual health? Join us as we challenge these stereotypes in a lively discussion with experts in the field of youth sexual health.

The event is free, but space is limited, so please RSVP Monica Penner at: ea-igh@exchange.ubc.ca by September 8th.

Invitation to POWER Study Cancer Chapter Launch

You are invited to the launch of the POWER Study Cancer chapter.

Date: Thursday, August 20, 2009
Place: 2 Bond St., Higgin’s Conference Room 2-010
Time: 1:00 to 3:00 pm

Please RSVP by August 14, to powerstudy@smh.toronto.on.ca  or call 416-864-3041.

The POWER Study (Project for an Ontario Women’s Evidence-Based Health Report) is producing a comprehensive provincial Report on women’s
health. The Report is designed to serve as an evidence-based tool to help policy makers, health care providers and consumers improve the
health of, and reduce inequities among the women of Ontario. The Cancer chapter reports on leading causes of cancer in women, including cancers of the breast, reproductive system, lung, and
colorectal cancer. We report on cancer incidence, survival rates and end-of-life care; and include indicators that capture the continuum of cancer care (prevention, screening, treatment and follow-up, and end-of-life care). We examine performance on these indicators for women and men and assess differences by income, age and geography.

In addition to the presentation of the POWER Cancer findings, this event will provide an opportunity for networking and discussion of how findings can be used to promote women’s health and health equity in the province.

Available on our website for download are Chapter 1, Introduction to the POWER Study, Chapter 2, The POWER Study Framework, and Chapter 3, The Burden of Illness.

The biennial conference of the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse

November 15–18, 2009
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Reduced rate for ‘early-bird’ registration, until September 18

The theme for this conference draws inspiration from the National Treatment Strategy (NTS). Released in November 2008, the NTS sets out a vision and action plan for improving Canada’s substance abuse treatment system. The conference theme explores the personal "pathways to change" that individuals can pursue into and through a tiered model of treatment that strives to ensure services and supports are matched to individual needs, are provided in a timely fashion, and are evidence based. The conference will also examine "system bridges"—some established and others yet to be developed—across the range of services that are important to ensure tightly coordinated care experiences.
