Support group/peer support

Provides culturally-sensitive services to immigrant and visible minority women, children, and families who are experiencing family violence. Bilingual/bicultural workers provide individual and group counselling women in situations of family violence prior to, during, and after their stay in a transition house; supportive services for interactions with the legal and social systems; and volunteer training to develop organizational and leadership skills. Also provides supportive counselling and referral for women who are victims of sexual assault or adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Ongoing support groups for women who have experienced violence allow the sharing of common experiences, and focus on self-esteem, assertiveness, problem-solving skills, and resources available in the community. Through the Children Who Witness Abuse Program, provides individual and group counselling to children ages preschool to 19 who have witnessed violence. Provides educational programs to multicultural communities regarding the dynamics of family violence and alternative models of treatment, and provides consultation and educational programs to professionals. Confidentiality is strictly maintained. Service is offered in Amharic, Arabic, Cantonese, Czech, Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Ilocano, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Punjabi, Russian, Slovakian, Spanish, Tagalog, Tigrania, Urdu, Vietnamese, and Visayan. Office hours are 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday. Nonprofit society. Funded by MCAWS Stopping the Violence (STV) Counselling Program, MPSSG Community-based Victim Services, and Health Canada. Serves Burnaby, Coquitlam, Delta, Maple Ridge, North Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, West Vancouver, White Rock, and Vancouver.
