Learn about BC’s home care system, where community health workers provide home support. Program planners and policy makers will learn strategies for recruitment and retention, as research suggests that experiences in communities are similar, with comparable issues that cross jurisdictions. This talk will highlight strategies tailored to the needs of small towns and rural communities.

Prairie Women’s Health Centre of Excellence welcomes Zena Sharman, a PhD Candidate in the Interdisciplinary Studies program at the University of British Columbia. Her research focuses on the working lives of community health workers, the dedicated care providers at the core of BC’s home support system. She is especially interested in the dynamics of community health worker recruitment and retention in small towns and rural communities. In addition to her doctoral studies, Zena works full-time as the Assistant Director of CIHR’s Institute of Gender and Health.
