Please join the Institute for Women's and Gender Studies (in Winnipeg) for an introduction to the REDress project on campus on Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm in the Duckworth Centre, second floor lounge, at the University of Winnipeg.
The REDress Project is a public art installation, which will be installed at UW from March 7-12, 2011, that aims to raise awareness surrounding the murder and disappearance of over 500 Aboriginal women across Canada. The aim of the project is to collect, by community donation, 500 RED dresses to later install and display in public spaces in an effort to draw attention to this often overlooked national issue. Educational initiatives connected to the project will help to broaden knowledge of the circumstances and underlying social structures that marginalize and misrepresent Aboriginal women in Canada as well as the conditions that lead to racialized and gendered violence.
The organizers intend this launch to be an opportunity for folks to learn about the project, and pick up some educational materials about the issue that can be shared in the classroom, workplace, or home. Join them for coffee and cake, and learn how you can support the REDress Project. Please also consider donating a gently used RED dress of any size or style to the project at the launch.
Please share this information widely, and for more information contact Kim Hunter at iwgs@uwinnipeg.ca.
