Who Should Attend?
Three keynote speakers and numerous concurrent sessions over the two days of our conference will provide a learning and networking opportunity for anyone who works for and with marginalized communities affected by sexual violence. This may include (but is not limited to) social workers, mental health professionals, law enforcement, health care professionals, educators, support workers, advocates, students, and other professionals working in areas related to sexual violence.

Keynote Speakers
Janice Ristock, Associate Vice-President (Research) at the University of Manitoba, and a member of the Sexual and Gender Diversity: Vulnerability and Resilience Research Team will be speaking about her research on LGBTQ relationship violence and the need for an intersectionality framework.
Aishah Shahidah Simmons is an award-winning African-American feminist lesbian independent documentary filmmaker, television and video producer, published writer, international lecturer, and activist based in Philadelphia, PA. She is the producer, writer, and director of NO! The Rape Documentary, and will be giving a keynote entitled, "No One is Free While Others are Oppressed: Centralizing the margins in the anti-sexual assault movement."

Jessica Yee, who describes herself as a "multiracial Indigenous hip-hop feminist reproductive justice freedom fighter!", will be giving a keynote about the relationship between positive sex education and sexual violence in Indigenous communities. She is the founder and Executive Director of the Native Youth Sexual Health Network, the first and only organization of its kind in North America by and for Indigenous youth working within the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health throughout the continent.
In addition to their keynote addresses, all three keynote speakers will be offering at least one other breakout session during the conference.

Call for Proposals
The Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton invites you to submit a proposal for our upcoming conference on Sexual Violence in Marginalized Communities, to be held October 17-18, 2011, at the Chateau Louis Hotel & Conference Centre, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
We are seeking presenters to speak about their work on any topic related to our conference theme. We are seeking to fill a number of concurrent sessions ranging from 1 hour to 90 minutes. If people indicate that they want to offer shorter presentations, we will combine them thematically to create full sessions. We are happy to consider alternative formats to lecture-style presentations, including, but not limited to: the use of multimedia, interactive exercises, small-group discussions, and so on.
We are also offering a unique opportunity for students and novice researchers engaged in research projects related to the topic area to speak briefly (strict 8-10 minutes) about their work in "Research Sampler" sessions. Presenters in these sessions will be expected to describe their project’s a) research question(s); b) findings; and c) relevance to sexual violence in marginalized communities. At the end of each "Research Sampler" session, there will be opportunity for participants to field questions and inquiries, as well as network with others who have shared interests. Depending on the volume of applicants, there may be duplicate "Research Sampler" sessions offered at different times. These "Research Sampler" sessions are being offered in lieu of poster presentation opportunities.
