Sexy sells: The marketing of girls’ sexuality

Images of hypersexualized girls are so common that we hardly notice them anymore. In response, marketing companies try to draw our attention by eroticizing even younger girls. The goal is to catch our attention, brand their products and ensure our loyalty. In order to provide social context for this trend, Lilia Goldfarb looks at the connections between the sexualization of girls and the corporate marketing strategies of the industries that profit from this. She also looks at the health consequences of these practices. In this presentation Goldfarb explores strategies to encourage sex-more positive notions of sexuality and empowerment among girls and young women in a culture that can easily erode their self-confidence.

For 25 years, Lilia Goldfarb has worked on strengthening community capacity with a particular attention to issues affecting girls and women. Her Master’s thesis, “Buying into Sexy,” explored the issue of pre-teen girls and sexualization in the context of twenty-first century capitalism, a subject that she has been researching since 2004. Goldfarb worked with filmmaker Sophie Bissonnette on two NFB films: Sexy Inc.: Our children under influence and Staying Real: Teens confront sexual stereotypes.
