It is with sadness that we inform you that the Board of Directors of the Canadian Women’s Health Network (CWHN) has decided to permanently close the CWHN. This decision, confirmed by the general membership of the CWHN on September 18, 2017, was not taken lightly. Since suspending our activities and closing our office in 2014, the Board of Directors has continued to function, searching for alternative sources of funding, and hoping to see a shift in the funding climate following the change in the government in 2015. However, it has become clear that we will not be able to secure a stable source of funding that would allow the CWHN to continue as an independent source of health information.

The Board of Directors expressed its concern about the lack of funding for organizations committed to improving women’s health in Canada to the Minister of Health and inquired about the future of funding for organizations like the CWHN. We have since been informed by Health Canada that it will not be introducing new funding to replace the Women’s Health Contribution Program (WHCP), which was discontinued in 2013.

As you know, the CWHN provided Canadian women with independent health information for nearly 25 years. The CWHN website will continue to be available for some time as a record of our contributions to the national conversation on women’s health, but it will not be updated with new information. We are currently arranging to archive our records at the University of Ottawa, so that future generations will be able to learn about the work of the CWHN and its partners.

We thank you again for all of your support over the years. We are also immensely grateful for the network of support we have received from partners, supporters, and members in these past few years. The Board of Directors is saddened by this difficult decision, but we remain tremendously proud of the work of the CWHN and the difference it has made in the lives of Canadian women.

With our sincerest gratitude,

The Board of Directors

Lee Pearson (Chair)

Susan White (Secretary-Treasurer)

Susan Woodward (Board Member)
