National Association of Women and the Law

The National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL) is an incorporated not-for-profit feminist organization that promotes the equality rights of Canadian women through legal education, research, and law reform advocacy.

Created at a conference held at the University of Windsor law school in 1974. Since then NAWL has used its unique research and educational strategies to raise public awareness about legal issues affecting women.

Has played a major role in the following milestones towards Canadian women's equality:

  • inclusion of Sections 15 and 28 in the Charter of Rights & Freedoms,
  • amendments to sexual assault laws,
  • positive changes to family law and to the Divorce Act,
  • rape shield legislation, and
  • criminal harassment legislation.

Rosewood Shelter

La Maison Rosewood Shelter is an emergency shelter that provides both residential and non-residential support to abused women and their children in North Central Simcoe County.


* Counsellors provide crisis counselling both in person and via the telephone for women who have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
* Child residents receive counselling and support as well as age-appropriate activities through our Child Support Program.
* Counselling, legal advocacy and accompaniment, assistance with finding and maintaining housing, assistance with Ontario Housing and Ontario Works are available to shelter residents and on an outreach basis to women living in the community.
* All services maintain confidentiality of client information.


Women who have pets that will need alternate care arrangements should discuss this with Rosewood staff. Services are available through the local SPCA or the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association's Safe Pet Program.

Haliman-Norfolk Women's Shelter

Haldimand & Norfolk Women's Sevices is a charitable, non-profit corporation governed by an elected Board of Directors. Programs and services are funded by the Ministry of Community and Social Services, Ministry of Child & Youth Services and the Ministry of Health. Project Grants have been made availible through the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Ministry of the Attorney General. Our many programs and services are enhanced by the generous support of community donations.

 

In addition to the services and programs for women who have experienced abuse and children who witness abuse, we educate and advocate for social, cultural and political change for women's equality and human rights.

Kenora Sexual Assault Centre

Forms a women's resource centre owned and operated by a feminist collective, that works to create equality and justice for women with focus on educational programs on the prevention of violence against women and children, women gaining economic independence and women developing to their fullest potential, overcoming barriers of oppression to become full participants in society on an equal basis.

Centre Ressources Familiales Pavilion

Offers services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and to women in crisis or in need of support and assistance by offering a variety of services to meet their needs, including a 24 hour, toll free, support line. SIS (Sisters in Solidarity)

Assists and supports victims of domestic violence through friendship. Refers to appropriate support programs, if needed. Educates on the complexity of family violence and guides women to self empowerment.

Abrigo Centre
Provides a variety of services to physically abused women from the Portuguese community, including a support group for abused women. Transportation and child care are available. The location is also wheelchair accessible.
Breakthrough (For Women Who Are Experiencing Or Have Experienced Violence Or Abuse)
Provides counselling, education and support for women who have experienced or are experiencing abuse/violence. Increases women's self-esteeen and awarness through group work, individual counselling and referral to other appropriate resources. Professionally facilitated.
