A webinar recording on how girls empowerment groups can play a role in prevention of heavy alcohol use by girls and young women. Nancy Poole and Ginny Gonneau shared research on: current trends in binge drinking by girls and young women, key influences on girls' alcohol use, girl-specific health impacts of early and heavy alcohol use, and resources that may useful in your health promotion/ prevention work.

Presents current resources for starting a conversation about drinking with girls using video clips, becoming aware of the influences on girls’ alcohol use, and the health risks of early and heavy drinking, and offering holistic, girl-centered, health promotion/prevention programming.

Expert panel report on women & alcohol: Alcohol treatment services for Ontario women

Report on the The Expert Panel on Women and Alcohol that worked to identify the current supports available to Ontario women, current best practices, and key recommendations regarding treatment services for women with problematic alcohol use. Delivers four key messages:  Young women are drinking at progressively higher levels and are at increased risk for experiencing alcohol-related problems; Ontario has effective gender-sensitive treatment services, but services are not available to women in all regions of the province; stigma is a major barrier for women needing treatment for alcohol misuse and interferes with women seeking help; and better guidance and training for primary care should be a focus for immediate improvement.

Weight expectations: experiences and needs of overweight and obese pregnant women and their healthcare providers

Executive summary of a qualitative study that examined women’s experiences with maternity care, including the psychological, emotional, and social implications of overweight and obesity in pregnancy. It also sought to gain knowledge about health care providers’ experiences with maternity care for overweight and obese women to better understand what is required for providing the best care to this group of women.

Focuses on the implications of maternal overweight and obesity, the experiences of pregnant women who are overweight or obese, and the provision of maternity care for overweight or obese women. Highlights that there are significant gaps in our knowledge of the psychological and emotional implications of overweight and obesity throughout pregnancy.
