An independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public.  The IOM is the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, whose aim is to help those in government and the private sector make informed health decisions by providing evidence upon which they can rely.  Many of the studies that the IOM undertakes begin as specific mandates from Congress; still others are requested by federal agencies and independent organizations. The IOM also convenes a series of forums, roundtables, and standing committees, as well as other activities, to facilitate discussion, discovery, and critical, cross-disciplinary thinking.

Established in 2005 by the Government of Canada, and funded through the Public Health Agency of Canada, the NCCAH is one of six centres in the National Collaborating Centres for Public Health program, each focusing on a different aspect of public health. Together, the centres help improve response to chronic disease and injury, infectious diseases, environmental health and health disparities.

Established in 1997 as a network comprising nongovernmental organizations, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), cooperating agencies, and the Bureau for Global Health of USAID. The aims of the havens are to provide both excellent holistic care for sexual assault and gold standard evidence collection.
