In response to the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) women’s life expectancy study which revealed that respiratory systems diseases are the 3rd leading cause of death for women ages 65-74 in British Columbia, this is a review of 137 articles and other relevant documents discussing sex and gender issues for women’s respiratory disease and health, including grey literature reports.

When governments invite the public to participate in consultations to reform health care and other policies, they generally represent themselves as calling upon citizens to engage in a social, but apolitical process. This study questions this representation by rethinking how policy is formulated and enacted and by rethinking how Aboriginal women are regarded when they engage in the health care system.

This discussion paper examines issues related to tobacco control policy, taxation, and legislation as they affect Aboriginal women and men in BC, and identifies potentially differential impacts when gender differences are taken into account.

Summarizes the findings of The VANDU Women's Clinic Action Research for Empowerment Project (VANDU Women CARE), this report provides insight into the primary health care experiences of women who use illicit drugs in the DTES, and highlights implications for improving health policy and service delivery.

The recently released report is a follow-up document to Advancing the Health of Girls and Women: A Women's Health Strategy for British Columbia (2004). It reports on advancements made in support of the Strategy and those occurring concurrently across the province in the Strategy's three priority areas:  

1) Improving Women's Health Monitoring, Surveillance, and Reporting

2) Sustaining Access to Maternity Care

3) Supporting Women-centred Approaches to Mental Health, Problematic Substance Use, and Addictions

The Guide uses a broad approach to women’s health, which includes healthy living information, disease-specific recommendations and advice, and information concerning the social determinants of health. It includes information on women-specific health concerns as well as the links between women's health and the health of their communities. It has recommendations for ways to improve health and addresses issues that may come up for women at different stages of their lives. The Guide is intended to be an everyday resource, a potential first point of contact for information.

First Nations and Inuit women and infants face challenging health issues in their communities where there are environmental risks. Literature examining these contexts and the processes through which health is affected is relatively limited. The objective of this review is to examine and consolidate the available literature on environmental threats to First Nations and Inuit maternal health in order to identify priorities for future research.
