The spring issue of CrossCurrents: The Journal of Addiction and Mental Health, focusing on women and substance use, is now available. Published by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, CrossCurrents informs and educates health professionals about the latest issues in the addiction and mental health fields. Stories covered in the women and substance use issue include the childcare barrier to substance use treatment, women-centred strategies for fetal alcohol syndrome prevention, concurrent treatment for eating disorders and substance abuse, HIV-related harm reduction with sex trade workers, the trauma-substance use connection and more.

This document elaborates on how increased federal transfers to the provinces and territories represent a real opportunity for Canada to better comply with its human rights obligations to women, but only if governments agree to develop common standards and designate monies for programs and services on which women heavily rely. It also de-mystifies some of the terms of the current debate and articulates what, in our view, is at stake for women in this discussion.
