Drug Use in Pregnancy

Text Size: Normal / Medium / Large

October 27, 2008 Vancouver, BC

It is estimated that up to twenty percent of all newborns are exposed prenatally to alcohol, illicit drugs, and prescription opiates. Identifying the mother and her newborn are the first steps required for individualized treatment for the specific drugs. Neonates are extremely sensitive to the environment which must be altered by creative nursing interventions. Nurses can potentially have greatest impact, since women are most likely to be receptive to treatment while pregnant or immediately postpartum. Participants will leave equipped to assess mothers and their newborns and intervene with individualized care.  More information is available on-line

Pan-Canadian day of protest against Bill C-484

Text Size: Normal / Medium / Large

September 28, 2008 Pan-Canadian

A large Canada-wide day of protest is scheduled for Sunday September 28, 2008, with protests being staged in many large Canadian cities, in order to state vigorously that the population opposes this bill that will turn the clock back 20 years for women’s rights.

Bill C-484, the "Unborn Victims of Crime Act" passed second reading in Parliament last March.  This bill would make it a separate offence to injure or kill a foetus during a crime committed against a pregnant woman.   If it was adopted, it would establish the foetus as a new legal entity, a precedent which would set the table for challenging the right to abortion, and which could also lead to the criminalisation of certain pregnant women for behaviour deemed to be dangerous for the foetus.

Block Sunday September 28, 2008 in your planners right away, speak to your colleagues, friends, relatives, and come out in large numbers to say No to Bill C-484!

For more information on the day of protest, visit the web site.
