The CBCN is searching for Board members to represent the Yukon and Quebec. Our National Board of Directors is composed of women who have had breast cancer. There are generally one to two in-person weekend meetings a year, regular monthly teleconference meetings, monthly mailings from the national office, and a fairly large number of e-mails to read and respond to. Directors represent CBCN in their provinces and territories and bring information on activities and resources in their province or territory to the national office in Ottawa and to the Board itself. They also take information about CBCN’s work back to their provinces and territories. The ideal CBCN Board member would already be involved in local or provincial/territorial breast cancer groups and activities, have experience working with committees and Boards and expertise working with the media.

The PWHCE is seeking a part-time employee to facilitate the Strategic Development and new directions for the future. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Strategic Development Coordinator will assist in setting and implementing strategic development and communications goals. Responsibilities will include providing strategic counsel on executive communications, coaching Board members on content and presentation, and helping to develop strong relationships with community and corporate leaders. This position is located in Regina, SK, and is part-time until March 31, 2010.

Zoom in on Girls is a gathering of individuals and organizations who work with girls and young women…or those who wish to do so! The Zoom events focus on issues related to young women. Participants are invited to share their experiences and knowledge while exploring action strategies.

Girls Action Foundation is organizing Zoom events across Eastern Canada to support the regional networking of organizers, as well as to exchange skills and resources. This year there are Zoom events happening in Quebec, Ontario and the Atlantic provinces!

This conference will be held in Montreal (Université du Québec à Montréal [UQAM]) on December 4, 5 and 6, 2009, organized by the Institut de recherches et d’études féministes (IREF) (UQAM).

As part of the 20th anniversary commemorations of the December 6, 1989 massacre at the École polytechnique de Montréal, this international and multi-disciplinary conference brings together scholars and researchers, social and community workers and volunteers, and feminist activists to assess collectively how this tragedy has been understood in Quebec and other parts of the globe, reflect on the collective memory of this event, and discuss the issue of violence against women and feminists. 

The conference will have four major themes: (1) the collective memory of the École polytechnique massacre (“Montreal Massacre”), (2) the effects of the event on the feminist movement, (3) violence against women and feminists, (4) the renewal of actions and practices aimed at eliminating violence against women.

Although, all working people report they are suffering from more stress related to balancing responsibilities at work and at home, the greater burden is falling on women. Statistics reveal that women bear the brunt of duties associated with child care, are the primary caregivers for the elder care of aging parents and are responsible for the majority of household chores.

To identify the issues, NUPGE is conducting a survey that is directed to both union and non-union women. Please take a few minutes to complete the Quality of Women's Lives Survey.

In June 2009 CIHR's Institute of Gender and Health will host its inaugural summer institute for trainees (graduate students and post-doctoral fellows). The summer institute will take place at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC) from June 23-26, 2009. This residential workshop will offer participants an opportunity to increase their understanding of methods for gender, sex and health research, as well as the opportunities and challenges that arise from the application of these methods. The Summer Institute will also give participants the chance to network with colleagues and mentors from across Canada working in the field of gender, sex and health research.

We are accepting applications from trainees until March 1, 2009. Application forms and further information about the summer institute are available in both official languages at CIHR Institute of Gender and Health 2009 Summer Institute.

The Association for Research on Mothering (ARM) 13th Annual Conference will be held in conjunction with York University's 50th Anniversary Celebration October 22-25, 2009, York University, Toronto, Canada. We welcome submissions from scholan October rs, students, activists, environmental agencies and workers, environmental educators, artists, mothers and others who work or research in this area. Cross-cultural, historical and comparative work is encouraged. We encourage a variety of types of submissions including academic papers from all disciplines, workshops, creative submissions, performances, storytelling, visual arts and other alternative formats.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Network is now conducting a survey on the economic impact of a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment on labour force re-entry. You must be a Canadian and have been diagnosed with breast cancer within the past five years to participate in this survey.

Your comments are very important to the Network, as they will help us identify and then work to overcome any barriers Canadians face when they go back to work after having breast cancer. This survey should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. By participating in this survey you are making a real difference for others with breast cancer.

We encourage you to complete the survey online. Paper copies are available to those who do not have a computer or who are otherwise unable to complete online surveys. To receive a paper version of the survey, please contact Maureen Kelly at 1-800-685-8820 ext 225 or Maureen@cbcn.ca .

CIHR's Institute of Gender and Health (IGH) is sponsoring a travel awards competition for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows working on topics related to gender, sex and health. IGH will award successful candidates with up to $1,000 to help cover the costs of presenting their own research at conferences. The deadline for the current funding competition is February 16, 2009.
