Simon Fraser University, Harbour Centre
Join the Centre for the Study of Gender, Social Inequities and Mental Health for this exciting forum featuring Jemma Tosh's work: Challenging Queerphobic Practice: Protesting Ken Zucker’s ‘Treatment’ of Childhood Gender Identity Disorder. Jemma is a PhD Candidate visiting from Manchester Metropolitan University, UK.
Childhood Gender Identity Disorder (GID) is a very controversial disorder. With the revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) due for publication in 2013, complex debates about gender diversity and pathologization are growing. Jemma’s presentation challenges Zucker’s treatment approach, which lacks empirical support and uses the ‘prevention’ of transsexualism and homosexuality as a rationale for its implementation. It will also be interesting to hear Jemma reflect on the actions of the ‘Protest Zucker’ group, who challenged Zucker at a UK Conference in December 2010.
See invitation [3] for details. Please RSVP by April 18th 2011 to tbaron@sfu.ca [4].
