Gynecological cancer and its treatments may involve the removal and/or alteration of some of a woman's most sensitive organs. A woman's vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, vulva and labia are hidden. They are rarely talked about, even amongst close friends. The pain of losing these body parts creates wounds that are not visible to others, and can have a profound effect on body image.
"I felt very unattractive because of the body aches and soreness, and also the bloating. It affected me emotionally for months after surgery." - Linda
"My body had betrayed me." - Chris
"I feel badly about my body and I find it hard to think that my partner finds me attractive. I will have to learn to trust her opinion." - Patti
Body changes and their effect on body image forced many of the women we spoke with to rethink what it means to be a woman. Some used this time as an opportunity to work through these issues. A counsellor, a close friend or a loving partner, can help with this.
"No matter what was done to me and what I lost I will always be a woman don't let anyone take that away from you." - Anne-Marie
"Hopefully with time and support the emotional and physical healing will take place so that you can see YOU, by looking beyond the reproductive organs you lost." - Carole
