Women and Health Care Reform

Discusses the work of Women and Health Care Reform in applying a gender-based analysis to the issue of wait times in the Canadian health care system.

Examines contemporary pressures to move towards the privatization and commercialization of water services and delivery in Canada and evaluates the gendered health implications for women that would flow from these choices.

This article is adapted from "Not Just Victims: Women in Emergencies and Disasters" from Women and Health Care Reform.  The authors make an arguement for why looking at sex and gender can help identify and prepare for different strengths and vulnerabilities in times of crisis. 

A look at why private health insurance matters to women. Women receive the majority of health care in Canada and are the primary providers of paid and unpaid health care within and outside their households.

Ancillary work may be hidden because it takes place behind the scenes, but often it is invisible because it is taken for granted.  Tasks that are often only noticed when they do not occur.

Why are wait times women's issues and what are the issues for women.  Explores questions through the example of hip and knee replacement surgery.

Demonstrate a gender-based analysis of wait times with respect to hip and knee replacements. Recommends that this model be applied to research and policy in other clinical areas and to the examination of wait times in general.

Provides a gender analysis of "Healthy Canadians: A Federal Report on Comparable Health Indicators 2004."

Argues that quality of health care is threatened by new labour practices that treat certain workers (ancillary) as unimportant to good care.
